In the field of medicine, inspection, derived from the Latin word "Inspectio" meaning the act of beholding, entails a thorough and deliberate visual examination of the patient. This process relies solely on the unaided eye.

During inspection, the examiner carefully observes various external signs, including:

- Body features and symmetry of appearance
- Nutritional status or body weight
- Skin coloration
- Rate and depth of breathing
- Movement of the abdomen and each side of the chest during respiration
- Distribution of hair
- Divergence of the rectus muscles
- Characteristics of the umbilicus (location, shape, color, signs of infiltration)
- Gait and speech patterns

Additionally, gross deviations such as abnormal contours, scars, stretch marks, visible masses, discoloration, swelling, and tremors are noted.

However, inspection in medical practice extends beyond visual cues alone. It also involves:

- Listening for any sounds emanating from the patient
- Detecting any odors that may be present
