Drug Therapy (Pharmacotherapy)
Drug therapy, also known as Pharmacotherapy, involves treating diseases by
administering medications and is considered a subset of therapy.
Pharmacists, who specialize in pharmacotherapy, play a crucial role in
ensuring the safe, effective, and cost-efficient use of drugs. They are
tasked with providing direct patient care, often collaborating within
multidisciplinary teams, and serving as the primary source of drug-related
information for other healthcare providers.
In the United States, pharmacists can achieve Board Certification in
pharmacotherapy by meeting specific eligibility criteria and passing a
certification exam.
Despite their expertise in medication management, pharmacists are typically
not recognized as covered pharmacotherapy providers by insurance companies,
although they offer essential guidance on medications for both patients and
healthcare professionals.
